14-4-2008 Words from Mr. K.H. Chan on the 60th HK Schools Music Festival

The 60th HK Schools Music Festival has finally come to an end. Although some individual instrumental events have been cancelled due to the flu, many Wah Yan boys tried hard in the competitions and obtained outstanding results. Though we are not participating merely for prizes, good rewards would always turn to self-motivation so that one can prepare for his next music journey.
All music groups are performing well. The Intermediate Choir has won two championships--in Chinese Language Singing and Mixed Choir Chinese Language Singing--joinging the Belilios Public School in the mixed choir event. Mr. Lee Tak Kuan, the former music teacher (1974-1991), were there with us witnessing the recapture of the Intermediate Boys' Choir (Chinese Language) after about 20 years. Nevertheless, all choir members gained a lifelong memory from this competition.
The Chinese Orchestra, after more than 10 years, was given a prize again this year. According to Mr. Ka-Hei Chan's information, the last time that our Chinese Orchestra won a prize (the champion!) should be in 1996, while he was in his Form 3 year (playing double bass in the orchestra!). Congratulations to the Chinese Orchestra!
The legendary Wind Ensemble, including 2 Form 4 students adn Form 2 students, played Ravel's famous tune 'Bolera' at the Music Festival. They practised for long hours over the holiday. Our former music teacher, Ms. Agnes Hwong
(1993-2006) said, 'I am just wondering if there is a new boardcasting system installed inside the Ricci Building playing CD before I finally see that the ensemble is playing live Bolero!' Finally, one day after this incident, the ensemble has got a second place! Well done boys!
Last but not least, thanks should be given to all conductors of the orchestras including Mr. Woo, Mr. Lo and Mr. Fong. Without their tremendous efforts made to the orchestras, there will never be a chance for us to sit in front of the jury playing comfortably and in good confidence.
Apart from group events, many individual players have gained good result at the music festival. Most of them are of high musicality and calibre. There is a bright future ahead of them!

2-1-2008 Isabel Gentile, Roberto Abbondanza & Students Vocal Music Concert
Renowned bel canto singers Isabel Gentile and Roberto Abbondanza performing Aria, Italian songs and Lieder by Wolf, Mozart and Tosti. Their students who have been learning with them for 2 to more than 15 years will also perform operatic excerpts and songs in Italian, French, German and Chinese. This is a rare chance to enjoy professional concert of vocal singing. Our school choir will give audience a surprise......Tickets available now through Hong Kong Ticketing at Tom Lee Music Shops. Current students may reserve tickets through the School General Office.
